A 31-year-old woman has been sentenced to 17 years in jail after she dropped her friend’s baby girl 130ft to her death.
Daria Shavelkina from Moscow was ‘envious’ of 30-year-old Yaroslava Korolyova, a mother-of-three who had a loving husband and healthy children.
According to reports, Shavelkina was pregnant and met the victim at her home to pick up secondhand baby items.
But when Yaroslava looked away, the cosmetics consultant grabbed her 2-month-old daughter and dropped her out of the apartment window.
Criminal investigation reports said that there had been no arguments between the friends before the tragic incident.
Yaroslava ran 13 floors down but her baby was already lifeless after hitting the ground. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The grieving mother was ‘in deep shock’ and needed medical assistance after the death of her baby.
When Shavelkina was arrested, she told police that she had ‘heard voices in her head’ telling her to throw the child.
She also claimed that she was mentally ill.
After she was examined by psychiatrists at the Serbsky Centre, the court ruled the defendant had ‘faked’ schizophrenia to avoid responsibility for the murder.
“A comprehensive examination was held at the Serbsky (Centre),” Investigative Committee official Yulia Ivanova said.
“They did not find any evidence (of the mental illness).
“According to the experts, the woman simulated the disease.”
Shavelkina gave birth while she was in custody. She was found guilty of the murder of a minor, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars.
“The Moscow City Court issued a guilty verdict in a criminal case against 31-year-old resident of the Moscow region Daria Shavelkina,” the city prosecutor office said.
“The court sentenced her to 17 years in prison in a general regime correctional colony.”
