Amid a surge of COVID cases driven by the Delta variant, the US experienced a 131 percent increase in new cases for the week ending July 25 compared to the previous week, with 500,332 Americans becoming infected with the virus, according to the WHO’s epidemiological report.

The Delta variant is causing cases to rise in all 50 states. The rising case rate provoked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to advise all vaccinated Americans living in areas of high or large spread to wear masks indoors.

The top five countries with new cases are United Kingdom, India, Brazil, and Indonesia.

The world at large observed 3.8 million new cases, an 8% increase over the same time period. More troublingly the number of deaths related to COVID-19 (more than 69,000) represented a 21% jump.

“An average of around 540 000 cases were reported each day over the past week as compared to 490 000 cases reported daily the week before,” the United Nation’s health agency said. “This increasing trend is largely attributed to substantial increases in the Region of the Americas and the Western Pacific Region.”

The increase in cases is large because of the spread of delta variants as well as a slowdown in the US vaccine drive.

According to the CDC, only 49.2% of the country’s citizens with ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated.

And if this situation continues, the total number of cases worldwide could exceed up to 200 million in the next two weeks.

More than 34 million Americans have been infected with COVID-19 and over 615,000 deaths recorded so far in the US.

Moreover, CDC said that more than 49 percent of the American population has been fully vaccinated with 57 percent receiving at least one dose.

US daily coronavirus infections are rising again after numbers fell in May and June. The quickest increases in COVID cases are in US states with lower vaccination rates, such as Florida, Texas, and Missouri.

In the last week, the COVID-19 deaths also increased by 21 percent all over the world. Most of the 69,000 deaths occurred in the Americas and Southeast Asia.
