A toddler was shot dead after getting caught in a crossfire while sleeping in his parents’ car.
23-month-old Jasper Wu succumbed to his wounds after being dragged into a senseless shooting on Interstate 880 in Oakland, California.
According to the reports, Jasper was sleeping at the back of his mom’s car when their vehicle was caught in a crossfire on Saturday afternoon.
After gunmen in the two vehicles surrounding the family’s car opened fire, the young boy was shot in the head.
Following the incident, the toddler was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the authorities launched a manhunt for the gunmen and urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
As of this writing, the police have revealed that one of the gunmen is believed to have been driving a dark Chrysler 300.
“Evidence collected on the northbound side of the freeway may indicate the victims were not targeted and the child passenger was struck by a stray bullet,” Oakland Police confirmed.
Comparing the reality to insanity, Oakland City Councilor Noel Gallo suggested that the shooting was a result of the rise in gang activity.
Condemning the senseless shooting was also Carl Chan of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce who said: “It’s horrible to imagine this family having a nice day and then the bullet hit the baby. It’s unimaginable.”
Our thoughts are with the Wu family during these tragic times.
