The citizens of Texas will now be allowed to carry handguns without a permit, confirmed by reports from several local media outlets.
This news comes as the state’s Senate passed out a new bill that turns around the previous laws with plenty of requirements needed for handgun possession.
While there were quite a few Republicans who voiced their hesitant opinions regarding the matter, the decision was ultimately passed out in the state’s Senate with a majority of 18-13 votes along the party’s lines.
Meanwhile, the state’s governor, Greg Abbott also boldly mentioned how he fully supported the bill and looked forward to signing it into the law, once the news reached his desk.
Currently, the law has been drastically changed, requiring citizens to put forward their fingerprints, pass four hours of training and then sit for an examination which is conducted in written format.
In addition, citizens would need to pass a shooting proficiency test as well to carry a handgun. With that being said, it was also revealed how the state would not need any form of license for possessing a rifle.
One Republican Senator, Charles Schwertner, mentioned how the bill was a great restoration towards greater belief as well as trust in the citizens.
Meanwhile, a recent polling session conducted in the state showed how the majority of citizens did not support the unlicensed carry of firearms while another 59% mentioning how they fully opposed the new policy. In the same way, the same poll found how the majority of Democrats opposed the law while a small number of Republicans supported the measure.
In the last few years, the state of Texas has been witness to several mass shootings that killed many. This includes the shocking mass killings in 2019 which left at least 30 people dead.
With the number of such incidents on the rise, Texas is definitely not the only state loosening up its restrictions during a time of crisis in the country as news reports confirm how both Florida, as well as South Carolina, will soon be following a similar pattern.
