A student was found guilty of murdering his own grandmother years after the lady’s tragic passing.
Back in 2018, 94-year-old Mary Gregory, the mother of 21-year-old Tiernan Darnton’s stepmother, died in a blaze at her home in Heysham, England.
Though the investigators initially believed that the fire was accidental and that foul play was not involved, dark truth came out years later after the woman’s grandson made a shocking revelation.
During a game of truth or dare that followed just weeks after the senior’s death, Darnton told his friends that he had murdered his grandmother.
He later also told a counselor that he was responsible for setting a curtain in the woman’s home on fire.
In 2019, after the shocking truth came out, the police reopened the case and found out that the student had a history of disturbing, violent searches on the internet.
The investigators also discovered a series of drawings detailing the floor plan of the grandmother’s bungalow along with labels such as “quick exit” and “good hiding place”.
After he was confronted about the blaze, Darnton insisted that his actions were an act of mercy and that he didn’t want his grandmother “to suffer any longer from dementia.”
“Darnton regularly visited Mrs Gregory’s home after her son took him under his wing at a young age.
Darnton would spend time at Mrs Gregory’s bungalow and not only took advantage of Mrs Gregory’s kind nature, he also used his access to her home to meticulously plan his murderous act,” Detective Chief Inspector Zoe Russo confirmed after the truth came out.
Now, three years after the grandmother’s death, Darnton has been convicted of murdering the elderly woman. He is set to be sentenced today.
