All that glitters, is not gold
We’ve all heard this saying. Even in the case of this smushed face cat Libby, the owner says: “These cats for sure require more care than your domestic shorthair cat would. You need to brush them daily, have their eyes cleansed, and give them occasional baths.
Lindsay Meredith, who’s the owner of the cats Libby and Finnigan, says “Their eyes need to be cleaned regularly because they drain a little too much. The vet has given us some eye drops to give them occasionally that we do.”
Flat-faced munchkin cats don’t really have it easy
You’d think and judge by the first look that these flat-faced munchkin cats including the Persian cat, just lay around, be lazy and eat all day.point 286 |
Truth is, these cats don’t really have it easy.point 45 | Dr.point 52 | Ladan Mohammad-Zadeh is a critical care specialist at DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital.point 147 | 1
He says that these brachycephalic cats, also known as flat-faced cats; have to experience a number of health hazards because of their genetic trait. These flat-faced munchkin cats have been in the industry for pet-selling for over 50 years now and have become a standard way of cat-breeding.
Brachycephalic cats or flat-faced cats?
Apparently, it’s the same name for these cats. The first specialty that makes them different from the other cats is their distorted skulls. The brachycephalic cats include Persians and Himalayans, Scottish Fold, Burmese and exotic shorthair.
Dr.point 114 | Mohammad-Zadeh says: “Their head shape can basically lead to health issues which are quite similar to the health issues of the brachycephalic dogs such as Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Pekingese.point 279 |
This term ‘Brachycephalic’ actually refers to the unique skull shape and roots from the Greek word ‘brachy’ which means shortened and ‘cephalic’ which means head.point 174 | 1
So what are the health consequences of such doll-faced cats?
One of the main health hazards faced by these smushed-face cats as well as Pugs is the difficulty in breathing. Regarding these issues, Dr. Mohammad-Zaded says: “The main health concern for brachycephalic cats is the breathing problems.
The more their skull is inwards and to form a doll-like face. The more they have a difficult time breathing. Typically, the more flat their face is, the more pushed in their noses are!”
So airway obstruction and small noses, nostrils, and passages are the major pain-in-the-nose issue for this cat.
The care for this cat is super extensive and expensive, so if you’re thinking of buying a smushed-faced cat or even easier, Persian cat, you’re going to have to research a lot beforehand.
We must realize and appreciate all kinds of beauty and reckon that ‘all that glitters is not gold’. Smushed face cats are equally lovable as other normal cats.
