A man who participated in the Capitol riot in January heckled police officers for protecting pedophiles, previously served jail time for raping a 14-year-old girl.
According to a CNN report, the Trump supporter was jailed before after being convicted of rape.
Sean McHugh, from Auburn, California, fought with the police as they dispersed the massive crowd of Trump supporters outside the Capitol on January 6.
In footage recorded by police body-worn cameras, McHugh allegedly shouted, “you guys like protecting pedophiles?” “you’re protecting communists,” “I’d be shaking in your little s–t boots too,” and, “there is a Second Amendment behind us, what are you going to do then?”, Federal prosecutors said.
McHugh’s comments about “pedophiles” are striking, considering his criminal records.
CNN reported that in 2010, McHugh was convicted on a state charge of unlawful sex with a minor. He was then sentenced to 240 days in jail —though he served less— and got four years of probation.
Former prosecutor Todd Kuhnen told CNN that there was DNA evidence that connected McHugh to the girl. The victim was 14 years old and McHugh was 23 when the crime happened.
The victim was allegedly intoxicated when the crime happened.
Kuhnen added that McHugh pleaded no contest to the underage rape charge.
The former prosecutor said that he didn’t take the case to trial because he didn’t want to “run the victim through the wringer again,” adding that the minor and her mother signed off to the plea agreement as part of California’s victims’ rights law.
CNN reported that McHugh’s comments about the police “protecting pedophiles” during the riot might be a reference to QAnon.
QAnon is a far-right movement that believes the baseless conspiracy that Democratic officials and liberal figures are Satan-worshipping pedophiles who control the world.
Many rioters supports QAnon and believes that Trump was destined to defeat the cabal.
