The human remains discovered in a purple suitcase found in a barn in Wisconsin have been identified as those of a 25-year-old woman who disappeared last July, according to sheriff’s officials.
Rosaly Cindy Chavarria Rodriguez vanished from the Wisconsin Dells area last summer.
In October, the remains were discovered in a suitcase at an abandoned farmhouse about 150 miles (241 kilometers) from where she lived.
It took authorities a year to identify the remains but police announced on Monday that they were those of Rodriguez.
It is not clear why it took a year to match her DNA. Police are now working to determine who is responsible for her death.
Officers say they already have a person of interest but have not named any suspects and haven’t made an arrest.
Police were first alerted to the barn in October last year from an informant who helps with drug investigations.
Chippewa County Sheriff Jim Kowalczyk said: “The problem with this is we still don´t know where she was killed; we don´t know where the homicide took place.”
A Texas crime lab released DNA results to Kowalczyk last week, stating the profiles matched the missing woman.
Detectives have identified a person of interest but did not give further details.
Kowalczyk said the suspect was last seen in southern states and there is no danger to the public in western Wisconsin.
Rodriguez, a native of Peru, had been working in the Wisconsin Dells area. She was living in Reedsburg, about 25 miles southwest of Wisconsin Dells and the Lake Delton tourist area.
