As Russia loses ground on the battlefield, the Kremlin has been sending signs that it is ready for a major escalation.
Putin had already hinted that he might do something like this, and yesterday it was said that a train run by Russia’s secret nuclear division was headed for Ukraine. This made people even more worried.
Konrad Muzyka, a defense analyst from Poland, said that the train, which was seen in central Russia, was connected to the 12th main directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense and was “responsible for nuclear munitions, their storage, maintenance, transport, and distribution to units.”
A senior defense source, on the other hand, said that the Black Sea would be a more likely place for Putin to show that he is ready to use nuclear weapons.
They said it was “not impossible” that Putin could fire a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine, even though they thought a show of force was more likely. If he did that, he would be taking a big risk.
“They could miss and hit a Russian city like Belgorod that is close to the border with Ukraine,” the source said. Putin once again threatened by saying, “This is not a bluff,” when he gave a hint to use nuclear weapons again on Sept. 21.
The White House said that Washington and its allies will take decisive action if Russia uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine. The United States told the Kremlin that there could be “catastrophic results.”
Kyrylo Budanov, who is in charge of military intelligence in Ukraine, says that Russia will not launch a nuclear attack soon.
Some reports say that Putin has told his closest family members, including his gymnast partner Alina Kabaeva, 40, that they might have to leave quickly.
Reports also reveal that Putin is thinking about using tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine as his invasion fails and his army is beaten back by the Ukrainian army.
