A mother and her toddler son who fell to their deaths from a baseball stadium in California have been identified.
40-year-old Raquel Wilkins and 2-year-old Denzel Browning-Wilkins were both pronounced dead after their fatal fall from a concourse at Petco Park.
According to the mother’s Facebook page, she was a chemistry teacher at Durant High School and a regional lead at California Value Academy.
Wilkin also announced on Facebook that she was engaged to her son’s father Christopher Browning – the same day of her and their child’s devastating death.
According to the San-Diego Union Tribune, Wilkins and Denzel were with Browning who was in the stadium for the Padres game when the incident happened.
Witnesses said they saw the mother was holding her son when she climb onto a bench, landed on the concourse, then jumped again and fell over the edge of the railing.
“The victims’ deaths appeared to be suspicious, and out of an abundance of caution the San Diego Police Homicide Unit was called to the scene,” said Lieutenant Andra Brown.
“The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are still in the process of interviewing witnesses and attempting to locate evidence.”
People wrote heartfelt messages on Wilkin’s page after she and her son were identified.
“My heart is broken wide open for this family. Please know that the hearts of so many are with you,” one person wrote.
“Very very sad and I am so sorry to the family/friends and witnesses. Poor baby boy Denzel,” another commented.
“Heart breaking! Engaged on the same day? Please don’t tell me she was celebrating and fell or had “one too many”. Very very sad and I am so sorry to the family/friends and witnesses. Poor baby boy Denzel,” a third added.
