At least 45 people, including one dozen children, burned to death after their bus hit a barrier and went up in flames.
On Tuesday morning, at around 2 am, a bus carrying 52 people was incinerated after catching fire following a collision with a guardrail located between opposing highway lanes.
The incident took place in Bulgaria as passengers from Macedonia, of whom most were reportedly Albanians, were returning home following their road trip to Turkey.
According to the preliminary reports, 45 people, including 12 minors, burned to death after the vehicle caught fire. The investigators have since been struggling to identify the victims whose bodies were reportedly “completely burned out.”
The surviving 7 individuals managed to escape the inferno in time to save their lives after breaking one of the windows and hurling themselves out of the fireball.
As the police have confirmed, the people were left trapped in the burning vehicle with no one available to open the doors after the driver died instantly upon crashing into the barrier.
According to Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, he had spoken to one of the survivors who told him that the passengers were fast asleep when the tragedy struck.
“He explained that they were sleeping in the bus when an explosion was heard. They succeeded to break one of the windows and save few people. Unfortunately, the rest did not succeed,” the PM revealed.
“It is great tragedy… 12 (victims) are under 18 years old, and the rest are young people about 20 to 30 years old.”
