A high school student in North Carolina was shot dead by a fellow student, marking it the second school shooting in the state in only three days.
The shooter has been arrested ‘without incident’ following the shooting at Mount Tabor High School on Wednesday at around 12:10 pm.
Police responded to the school and found the victim, identified as William Chavis Reynard Miller Jr., downed with a gunshot wound.
Miller was rushed to a hospital where he “tragically succumbed to his injuries.”
School officials, law enforcement, and local leaders were visibly shaken during the afternoon press briefing.
Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson held back tears as she confirmed Miller’s death.
“I haven’t cried in a while, but I haven’t stopped crying since I left the hospital … While I’m sad, I’m sure mad as h*ll,” Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. said.
He had a heartbreaking conversation with Miller’s mother at the hospital.
“She said, ‘Mr. Kimbrough, my baby.’ I told her I was going to do everything I could to find who’s responsible for this. I wasn’t going to give his name. My first responsibility is to the family in times like this, and she said, ‘Say his name.’”
The gunman was not on the school grounds by the time police arrived on the scene.
Tracy Bush, a parent of one of the students, told Daily Mail while she waited to see her daughter: “I turned into the mom from ‘Terms of Endearment’ – I started screaming and crying, telling them I’m not leaving without my daughter.
“Other parents were doing the same thing. They let some of us in but nobody is with their kid.”
“Everyone here is safe,” she said at 3:10 pm. “Parents are in one area in the office hall, and students are on lockdown thru the school. Sheriff’s officers are here, and they keep checking to make sure the doors are locked.”
Gov. Roy Cooper released a statement on Wednesday afternoon, saying: “’For the second time this week, we have seen a shooting in a North Carolina school.
“Our prayers are with the victims, their families and all the students of Mt. Tabor High School in Winston-Salem.”
