A woman accidentally ran over and killed a thief who was trying to steal her catalytic converter, Komo news revealed.
According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, the California woman had been sleeping inside her vehicle in the parking lot of a mall in Palmdale when another car pulled up 6 pm Tuesday.
The group of four was described as two Hispanic women and two Hispanic men.
They reportedly parked next to the woman’s Ford Excursion. One of them stepped out of the car and lay under the woman’s vehicle in an attempt to steal her catalytic converter.
In a press release, police said that the woman woke up from the sound. She then turned her vehicle on and put the car in reverse then “felt a bump like she ran something over.”
After feeling the bump, the woman stopped right away and called 911, leaving one of the men under her vehicle.
When cops arrived, they found the woman’s car with the thief still under it and other suspects’ vehicle parked beside it.
The alleged thief was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The three other people were detained but no names were released as of this writing. Police also did not share whether the woman is facing any charges but the case has been classified as a homicide.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, thefts of catalytic converters have increased by over 1,200 percent over the last few years because of the metals they are made with.
This comes after thieves managed to steal Oscar Mayer Wienermobile’s catalytic converter in a parking lot of Sonesta Suites in Las Vegas.
The 27ft-long Mayer mobile was then towed to the Penske Truck Rental at West Hacienda Avenue and South Decatur Boulevard.
