A 90-year-old woman who has never missed a day of work or called in sick for the past 74 years has finally retired from her retail job.
Melba Mebane from Texas celebrated her retirement after working for more than seven decades at Dillard’s.
She was only 17 years old when she started working for the company in 1956, starting as an elevator girl before being transferred to the cosmetics department.
After a lengthy career spanning more than seven decades, Melba has finally retired, leaving her clients and co-workers who grew to love her.
James Saenz, the store manager, said Melba’ touched many lives.
“Melba sets the tone for everything, every expectation, every customer service quality that we look for in a luxury experience,” Saenz told Fox News.
“She provides all of it to the team. Can you imagine how many people she coached and taught and trained to aspire to be more?”
The store manager also said that it was ‘amazing’ to think about how many lives Melba touched, praising the 90-year-old for providing the team and customers with life advice.
She told Fox News that she was happy to work with ‘great ladies who love to eat, laugh, and cut up.’
Melba cherished the friendships she made while working at the retail giant, adding that those bonds made her enjoy her job even more.
Her son, Terry Mebane, told the outlet that he would often hang out with his mother, adding that he ‘grew up in Dillard’s.’
“She’s a grinder. The store would open at 10 and she wanted her parking spot, so she got there between 9 o’clock and 9:15,” Terry said.
“She was the first person in the door and had her counter ready. She did the prep work. She only took 30 minutes for lunch.”
After experiencing health problems, the 90-year-old finally decided to say goodbye to her Dillard’s family.
“I just turned 90, I’m not driving and most of my friends aren’t here anymore,” she said.
The store hosted a retirement party for her and she received the beyond excellence award.
