A 23-year-old woman with 40 different personalities is fighting for her right to be euthanized after doctors rejected her request.
Olympe, who goes under the username @we.are.olympe on Instagram, recently told her followers that she was ‘in contact’ with doctors in Belgium where euthanasia is legal.
The influencer suffers from dissociative identity disorder, a mental condition that is characterized by ‘switching’ to alternate identities.
According to Mayo Clinic, people with the disorder may feel the presence of two or more people living inside their heads.
But Olympe said she was told by Belgian doctor Yves de Locht that clinics were not ‘euthanasia dispensers’ and that the process can take years or months before a person can receive their assisted suicide services.
According to the Daily Mail, the 23-year-old lives with 40 different personalities.
She said on Instagram: “In the last quarter of 2023 I will have recourse to assisted suicide in Belgium.”
“I am already in contact with the doctors,” Olympe went on. “It’s not a debate. It’s my life. It’s a decision that I made which was difficult to take.”
She also revealed that she couldn’t control her condition or its causes.
But the doctor told French paper Le Parisien that the country was weary of being described as a place were people can willingly end their lives.
“I haven’t seen her medical dossier but I’ve read her emails. She wants to meet me,” the Brussels-based doctor said.
“We do not refuse to meet (people like her) but we explain to them that the process can last months or even years.”
The doctor added: “This young woman has announced the end of her life at the end of the year. This date certainly doesn’t come from me. I need much more information before envisaging meeting her.”
