The daycare owner who shot her husband in the neck and leg after being told that he was assaulting children faces ten years in prison.
50-year-old Shanteari Weems stormed into her husband’s hotel room at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington DC after one of the parents who trusted her center complained that he molested their child.
This was already the second allegation against her husband, and since then James Weems Jr., 57, has been charged with ten offenses.
Weems was taken into custody after driving to the hotel where James, a retired Baltimore police officer, was staying to attend a conference.
An investigation found that he had assaulted at least three children at the daycare center.
The daycare owner now faces up to 10 years in prison on charges of weapons and assault offenses.
But her lawyer, Tony Garcia, insists that she is a non-violent woman who has spent two decades caring for children.
“She is remorseful but it’s a relief that law enforcement believes he molested children,” Garcia said.
“He was denying it, but now that it’s been confirmed. She was right. He was molesting them.
“And in fact, it’s worse than what she thought because there are three children involved, not two.”
Shanteari has worked in childcare for 20 years but has only been married to James for five years.
Just last week, Shanteari was denied bond. “It’s ironic that they think she is a safety risk when the only reason she’s in jail is because she was trying to protect the safety of children,” her attorney said to Daily Mail.
He also said that she was also ‘relieved’ that her husband had been charged as it proves that ‘she was right.’
