A North Carolina woman has opened up about her medical ordeal after her period landed her in the hospital.
In a piece for Insider, Ronny Maye recalled the time in 2018 when she needed a blood transfusion after losing a pool of blood due to a heavy period. While she is used to heavy periods, this one was different in the sense that it lasted for 83 days.
As Maye revealed, she is no stranger to bloody and painful periods because she suffers from PCOS, a condition that causes excess production of male sex hormones and affects one in eight women.
She was, however, shocked when her period wouldn’t end for nearly three months despite the fact that it usually stopped after a week.
At one point, the young woman lost so much blood she had to visit the ER to stop the blood flow and receive a transfusion.
“Deep down I knew that something was not right. I was absolutely petrified,” she noted.
She went on to claim that her doctor initially questioned her when she explained she had lost a lot of blood and went on to tell her she could return home.
Maye, however, knew that her bleeding was severe and that she could die without tranexamic acid to reduce the bleeding.
“I would have been going home to possibly die,” she added as she revealed she demanded to stay at the hospital overnight.
As the bleeding continued in the following days, Maye eventually required a blood transfusion and a procedure to scrape the lining of the uterus to remove buildup.
Fortunately, the period came to an end after a long and grueling 83 days.
“I haven’t experienced another menstrual cycle like that one, but I wholeheartedly believe that advocating for myself saved my life,” Maye concluded.
