A woman who developed 2,500 different personalities has successfully sued her father for $840,000.
52-year-old Jenny Haynes has dissociative identity disorder after her father assaulted her when she was 4 years old to 11.
After reporting his crimes to the police in 2009, her father Richard Haynes was extradited from the UK to Sydney in 2019 and sentenced to jail in 2019 for more than 33 years.
The judge ruled that the victim’s life had been ‘destroyed’ by the attacks, which started in 1974 and ended in 1981 when they returned to England.
Jenny only survived because of her multiple personalities. She first created a girl called Symphony – which was the personality that would take over when she was assaulted.
She said that more alters developed after the attacks became too hard for ‘Symphony.’ Among other personalities are a little boy called Ricky and a teenager called Muscles.
Speaking to 60 Minutes, Jeni said: “It’s not an act of mental illness or playing silly games, pretending to be other people.
“You are protecting yourself. You are protecting your soul, and that’s what I did.”
Jenny’s father told her that her mother would ‘spontaneously combust’ if she said anything about the attacks.
“Mommy doesn’t want you and if you tell her, she will die and it will be your fault,” he told her in one occasion.
Jenny recalled: “He implied she would drop down dead. He expanded my concept of ‘telling’ to include any kind of demonstration of pain, fear, terror or discomfort.”
“He chose to do this every day of my entire childhood,” she expressed. “He heard me beg him to stop, he heard me cry, he knew the pain and the terror he was inflicting on me.
“My life has been devastated by his selfishness.”
Jenny revealed that she never knew that hearing multiple voices inside her head wasn’t normal.
“I didn’t know that you’re only supposed to have one personality,” she expressed.
Jenny is now using a permanent colostomy bag, which she has described as a ‘daily reminder’ of her father’s crimes.
“I want him to go to jail for a very, very, very long time and I hope his time in prison is as traumatic as my childhood was,” she added.
