A man whose girlfriend died at a young age is now on a heartbreaking mission to make her final wish come true.
Alex Halley was just 27 years old when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Just eight weeks after doctors told her to say her goodbyes because her condition was terminal, the young occupational therapist for children with physical disabilities passed away.
Aidan Solan, Alex’s boyfriend, has since spoken out to pay the love of his life a touching tribute and reveal her final wish.
The young man explained how Alex was absolutely selfless and how she always put others’ needs ahead of her own. Besides her work with children with disabilities, Alex also volunteered to work the night shift at a Covid ward during the pandemic.
For this reason, her last wish was to build an accessible playground that would allow kids with special needs to have fun and play outdoors like other children.
“I don’t know whether it was a panic attack or what, but I was just hysterically, hysterically crying. I couldn’t stop. [It was] just the realization of what was happening [and it] setting in,” Aidan said as he recalled the moment he was told his girlfriend had terminal cancer.
“We got told on Thursday that it was terminal, and I said my proper last goodbyes then. I sat in the room with her, and played the song that we always joked would be our first dance at our wedding.”
He also revealed that Alex wanted nothing more than to build an accessible playground as he launched a JustGiving page in an attempt to raise $100,000 to make her dreams come true.
“Before Alex’s illness set in, she worked at Richard Cloudesley School Islington -a school for children with physical disabilities and additional sensory needs – as an Occupational Therapist. Whilst it is rare that someone finds their vocation in life, for Alex this was it,” he wrote in his fundraiser.
“When speaking about the children at school, you could see her face light up and feel just how much she adored them. The need for an accessible playground for children of all abilities was a cause particularly close to Alex’s heart.”
Aidan went on to call his late girlfriend “amazing, caring, and passionate” as he revealed that caring for children meant the world to her.
“She touched the lives of anyone who got to know her. I’m hopeful we can channel the goodwill and the momentum this tragedy has created, into something positive,” he added.
“I can’t think of a better way to honor her legacy than by building something that improves the lives of those she devoted herself to.”
As of this writing, Aidan’s fundraiser has already reached 44% of the target amount.
