A 24-year-old has sadly passed away only weeks after developing a sore throat.
Bethannie Booth bid farewell to her family and friends and even managed to plan her own funeral before she was put in a coma.
Speaking to BBC News, her grieving sister Nia-ffion Davis said that the elementary school teacher developed a sore throat, noticed red bumps on her face, and a headache on March 2.
Only two days after getting the symptoms, she was rushed to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital as she suddenly struggled to breathe.
Bethannie was then put into resuscitation before she was transferred to the intensive care unit.
It was then discovered that her lung had collapsed because of a Strep A infection.
The 24-year-old then started fighting against sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency in which the body responds improperly to an infection.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, infections that develop into sepsis usually start in the lungs.
Doctors then decided to put Bethannie in a coma to give her organs time to recover.
That’s when she decided to send heartbreaking messages to her family and friends and even managed to plan her own funeral.
But the elementary school teacher still made light of the situation.
Her other sister, Megan Booth, said: “It kills me that she felt that, she must have been scared, but she was still able to crack a joke.
Bethannie told her mother to ban black clothes for her funeral, adding that all outfits should be colorful and bold.
The 24-year-old was transferred to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital where she spent more than two weeks on an ECMO machine. Her condition improved and she was transferred back to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
However, she developed sepsis again and died on March 31.
Speaking of Bethannie’s final moments, her dad Wayne Booth said: “All four of us went in to see her. We were holding her hand and she took her last breath.”
