A university student has sparked fury with a graduation photoshoot that has been branded as disrespectful, disgusting, and inappropriate by netizens.
Rachel Davenport, who is also known as Rachel Davenpole on social media, sparked a controversial debate after celebrating her graduation from the University of Arizona with a near-nude pole dance.
In her raunchy video, the former student can be seen wearing a traditional graduation gown and cap before posing upside down and showing off her thong on a pole outside her school.
“I couldn’t have made it this far without the amazing support from everyone at @verticafitness! From the bottom of my heart, thank you all so much,” Rachel wrote as she thanked her pole dancing team.
The video showing the young woman’s celebratory pole dance has since gone viral and racked up millions of views on TikTok where viewers were left divided.
“As a pole fitness enthusiast, it’s not that serious. It’s literally a sport,” one person wrote in support of the University of Arizona student who allegedly “graduated magna cum laude and received over $40,000 in scholarships.”
“It’s embarrassing and disrespectful to your school. Can’t you pose like a normal person??” another argued.
A third raged: “Your stupidity will live on the internet forever, to be seen by family, friends, and potential husbands and employers.”
Another critic wrote: “Fine with me if ya do it in private life but not this way it’s just disgusting and inappropriate.”
Previously, a Florida A&M University student, rapper Terica Williams, sparked fury as she posed nude in front of her school’s snake statue after getting a Master’s degree.
“As I’m standing here with my Master’s Degree at the tender age of 24, I am the living proof that clothes do not define you. I encouraged everybody to embrace their bodies and step outside social norms,” she said at the time.
After the “offensive” photoshoot, the university refused to present her with a degree for several months while freezing her transcripts.
Eventually, however, it was ruled that Williams didn’t violate any of the school’s policies because she photoshopped her picture to hide her thong.
“I think that my picture opened up a lot of conversation and dialogue. I hope that a lot of people see it as me being my authentic self and still being successful,” Williams later said.
