Just when you thought you already know everything about celebrities, something mind-blowing comes up.
This time, it’s about Robert Downey Jr. It was recently revealed that he would leave jars of his own urine around the set while filming the mystery thriller Zodiac.
He starred as US journalist Paul Avery alongside Mark Ruffalo as Inspector Dave Toschi and Jack Gyllenhaal as cartoonist Robert Graysmith.
Directed by David Fincher, the film centers on the manhunt for Zodiac serial killer, who was responsible for more than five murders in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The culprit, who teased investigators with cryptic messages, was never caught.
The movie was a huge hit, receiving multiple awards and being voted the 12th best movie of the 21st century in a BBC poll.
But things were a little bit tense behind the scenes, with Fincher and Downy always butting heads on set.
Speaking about his time working with Fincher, Downey told the New York Times: “Sometimes it’s really hard because it might not feel collaborative, but ultimately filmmaking is a director’s medium.
“I just decided, aside from several times I wanted to garrote him, that I was going to give him what he wanted. I think I’m a perfect person to work for him, because I understand gulags.”
Because the Fincher-run setup was very time-consuming, there wasn’t enough time for cast members to use the toilet.
Speaking on the documentary Side by Side of Keanu Reeves, Fincher revealed that Downey would leave jars of his own urine around the set.
“Robert Downey actually came up to me and said, ‘I can’t work like this. I never get to go to my trailer, I can never get my s**t together,” he said.
“I’m on my feet 14 hours a day.’ He actually left mason jars of urine on the set, like over in the corner. He’d pee and bring it back as a form of protest.”
