A man has shared the moment he proposed to his girlfriend at her mother’s funeral as he thought it was the right time to do it.
Posting on Reddit, the 25-year-old explained that his girlfriend’s mother did not approve of their relationship because of their five-year age gap.
He said that he had been planning on popping the question but could never determine what the right time was.
“The ring I bought was always in my pocket in hopes that the right moment would just happen, it never did and I think that was because I knew how her mother felt towards me,” he wrote.
“It was obvious that her mother didn’t approve of me due to our small age gap and she had never kept her dislike for me a secret, so there was no way in hell that she would end up approving us getting married.”
Sadly, his girlfriend’s mother died after being diagnosed with stage-four cancer.
“Whenever I was standing over her casket with my girlfriend hanging onto my arm, I looked down at her mother and thought to myself ‘This is it, I’m going to ask her today,’” he went on.
He said that he waited until the wake before pulling his girlfriend aside and delivered his prepared speech.
“I got down on one knee and asked if she wanted to marry me.”
However, his grieving girlfriend rejected his proposal and condemned him for being insensitive.
“I looked at her confused, not really processing what was wrong with the moment. If anything this could of been a metaphor of sorts, right? Her mum dies so suddenly and now I’m here proposing over the prospect of ‘life is too short’, ‘you only live once’ and making the most of it,” he went on.
Reddit users were also shocked by the man’s timing, with one person commenting: “This really feels like he was waiting for her to die because the mum expressed concern about him dating her daughter.point 275 |
Like he wasn’t sad at the funeral or even focused on comforting and supporting his girlfriend who just watched her mother get sick and die in one month, but he was like ‘one less roadblock.point 163 | ’”point 169 | 1
Another wrote: “Poor girl. Her mum was right about him. And the girlfriend didn’t get to see it until her mum was gone.”
