Police have issued a heartbreaking statement after Sinéad O’Connor was found dead at the age of 56.
The grieving family of the ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ hitmaker confirmed the news of her passing, saying: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.
“Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
After the devastating announcement, the Metropolitan Police issued a statement.
“Police were called at 11:18 hrs on Wednesday, 26 July to reports of an unresponsive woman at a residential address in the SE24 area,” they stated.
“Officers attended. A 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Next of kin have been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”
This came after O’Connor’s son, Shane, died at the age of 17 last year after ending his life.
Days before her passing, she took to Twitter and shared a series of posts about her son. She also shared a photo of them together.
One heartbreaking post read: “Been living as undead night creature since.. he was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.”
Figures from the music industry and beyond have been mourning the loss.
Irish president Michael D. Higgins said in a statement to CNN: “What Ireland has lost at such a relatively young age is one of our greatest and most gifted composers, songwriters and performers of recent decades, one who had a unique talent and extraordinary connection with her audience, all of whom held such love and warmth for her.
“May her spirit find the peace she sought in so many different ways.”
O’Conner has released ten studio albums over the course of her career. Her cover of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ became a hit during the 1990s.
