A 27-year-old mother broke down in tears as she was sentenced to at least 18 months in prison over the tragic death of her 7-month-old son.
Hope Marshall’s son, Kaiden Wood, passed away after he consumed antidepressant pills inside their home in Kentwood.
“I’m a mother full of guilt, shame, regrets, and pain. A mother’s worst nightmare is losing a child but what do you do when your own actions are responsible?” she shared her regrets as she was sentenced to jail.
Police received reports about an unresponsive toddler and when they arrived at the property, they found medications and a soup pot that contained vomit.
In court, Marshall said she ‘failed’ Kaiden and his brothers.
“Kaiden is my world and I failed him so badly. I let my drug addiction destroy my precious son’s life and my two other sons’ life as well,” she expressed.
The toddler’s father, Kyle Wood, was sentenced to at least 30 months for the heartbreaking death of his baby.
Reports revealed that when police searched the home in the 400 block of Prince Albert St. SE, they found medications that are commonly used as antidepressants.
13 ABC reported that a vape pen and a broken Acetaminophen pill were found inside Kaiden’s crib.
Marshall said that she had last seen her son alive at around 8 am after feeding him Cheerios and putting him inside the crib.
Only two hours later, the child was found ‘cold and blue.’
“He was in full rigor mortis at the time of arrival of EMS. He was pronounced deceased at 10:25 a.m. on 6/23/22,” an officer with the medical examiner’s office said.
Marshall told the judge that she hopes to use her time behind bars and after to turn her life around.
“I hope you can see how badly I want to change my life and how sorry I am for my actions and how much I’ve reflected on them,” she said.
