A 42-year-old mother who turned her son to police after he killed a 16-year-old boy said she would ‘do the same again’.
Donna Delbono made the heartbreaking decision after she found out that his son Joshua Delbono had stabbed Charles Bates, describing her actions as ‘the hardest choice any parent will ever have to make’.
The mother-of-seven said: “I was brought up to know the difference between right and wrong, and to always try to do the right thing in life, no matter how hard it is.”
She continued: “Even though it was such a tough choice to make, I know I’d do the same again.
“I couldn’t have lived with myself if I’d chosen instead not to call the police. I feel terrible that Charley Bates lost his life and my sympathies go out to his family.”
Her 19-year-old son was sentenced to life at Bristol Crown Court and was told he must serve 21 year behind bars.
Ms. Delbono’s call to police was also played in court. She was heard saying: “My son’s killed someone. It was at Radstock earlier. He’s just come back and I’ve found out. He’s in my house now but I can’t let him go anywhere.”
The mother said that her son admitted everything and he was terrified and did not know what to do.
“I said there was only one thing he could do – hand himself in to the police. But he said he was too terrified, so I said if he wouldn’t call them, I would. He just nodded,” she continued.
According to reports, charley Bates and one of the teen Delbono’s friends had a fight over money.
Passing sentence, Judge William Hart said: “Let me say to all who hear my remarks of the damage that is caused by carrying knives. What happened that day cast a horrible shadow over everyone.”
