A 40-year-old mother was left fighting for her life after an insect bit her while mowing her lawn 13 years ago.
Jorja Austin from Essex tending to her garden when a gnat bit her leg. She initially thought that it was just an irritating insect bite that didn’t want to heal but she had no idea that the four ‘pinhole-sized’ bites would pose a risk to her life.
She suspected that she developed a rare condition pyoderma gangrenosum because of iron deficiency but the nasty sores resulted in sepsis – a life-threatening blood infection.
She was rushed to a hospital in May this year as her health continued to deteriorate. She was also told that both her legs may have to be amputated to save her life.
Fortunately, the stay-at-home mother has since made a full recovery and she’s been able to enjoy Christmas for the first time in 13 years.
“I’ve had no life and been in agony for 13 years,” Jorja expressed. “I lost both my little boys due to my bad health. It got out of control.
“You wouldn’t believe that my legs were finally getting better. I’m so happy and over the moon after being so frustrated for so long.”
She said that her rare skin condition was diagnosed two years later. It then migrated to her other leg, preventing her from working for more than ten years.
“I was put into a coma in May after not being able to breathe from the sepsis,” she said. “My family were told to say their goodbyes.
“Since I came out of hospital I’ve learnt to walk again and now one of the ulcers is 50 per cent healed.”
Jorja now wants to warn others to seek medical attention after getting wounded.
“I didn’t get the right help at the right time,” she said. “You have to keep going back, again and again, to fight for the right treatment, or you’ll end up nearly dead like me. Don’t leave it to get as bad as I did.”
