A 58-year-old man who works as a lobster diver has shared the moment he was swallowed whole by a humpback whale while he was diving off the coast of Massachusetts’ Cape Cod.
The incident happened in June 2021 when Michael Packard ended up in the mouth of the whale for almost one minute.
But it seemed he didn’t taste delicious as the whale decided to spit him out, leaving him with a dislocated knee.
Despite the horrifying incident, Michael said he has no plans to find another job as he has been working for the same role for four decades.
Humpback whales can grow up to 15m (50ft) in length and weigh 72,000lbs (36 tons), according to the WWF.
After the incident, Michael told The Cape Cod times that he and his friend had gone diving off the coast of Herring Cove.
But when he jumped into the water, he felt a huge bump and everything suddenly went dark.
“All of a sudden, I felt this huge shove and the next thing I knew it was completely black […] I could sense I was moving, and I could feel the whale squeezing with the muscles in his mouth,” Michael recalled, adding that he first thought he was swallowed by a great white shark.
But when he didn’t get any wounds and the sea creature did not have razor sharp teeth, he realized that he had been swallowed whole by a whale.
“I was completely inside; it was completely black. I thought to myself, ‘there’s no way I’m getting out of here. I’m done, I’m dead.’ All I could think of was my boys – they’re 12 and 15 years old,” he expressed.
Fortunately, the whale spat him out within a minute.
“Then all of a sudden he went up to the surface and just erupted and started shaking his head. I just got thrown in the air and landed in the water. I was free and I just floated there. I couldn’t believe… I’m here to tell it,” he said, the CBS News reported.
