A man who has 12 wives, 102 children, and 568 grandchildren has finally decided to stop growing his big family because of his low income.
67-year-old Musa Hasahya, a Ugandan farmer, has now asked his partners to use contraceptives so they can still buy enough food for everyone.
“My income has become lower and lower over the years due to the rising cost of living and my family has become bigger and bigger,” he said.
Hasahya said, as per The Sun: “I married one woman after another. How can a man be satisfied with one woman?”
He and his family live in Lusaka where polygamy is legal. He and all of his wives live in the same house to prevent them from eloping with other men.
“All my wives live together in the same house. It’s easy for me to monitor them and also stop them eloping with other men in this village,” he said.
Zulaika, his youngest wife and mother of 11 of his children, said: “I’m not having any more children. I’ve seen the bad financial situation and am now taking the birth control pill.”
Many of his children live near them. His eldest child, 51, is about 20 years older than Zulaika.
His youngest child is 6 years old.
According to The Sun, Hasahya can no longer work because of health problems and that two of his wives left due to financial pressures.
Because of that, he has ordered his wives to go on the pill.
“I cannot tolerate bearing children anymore because of the limited resources. And on that note I have advised all my wives of childbearing age to go for family planning.
“I also discourage those who wish to marry more than four wives not to do so because things are not good.”
