A 26-year-old man was left heartbroken after he found his mother and sister dead inside his burger van.
Tyla Wanstall from Kent, UK, owns a burger van, and his mother Leah Churchill, 50, and sister Brooke Wanstall, 17, decided to decorate it for his birthday.
According to reports, the two turned the generator on in the van, which Wanstall said he only used outside the vehicle.
Wanstall was left devastated after finding his mother and sister lifeless inside the van due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and found that the generator had already run dry and that there was a high carbon monoxide reading.
Speaking to Kent Online, Wanstall said that his mother and sister were putting up balloons in the van and had switched on the generator to keep warm.
“My mum just did anything for anyone. All my mates loved her, she loved all my mates. She died – they both lost their lives – in their last moments in this trailer putting a smile on my face,” he said.
“It was a mistake my mum made just out of the goodness of her heart and that was it and it’s taken both of their lives.”
According to the CDC, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless gas that is released from burnt fuel in trucks or cars, fireplaces, small engines, furnaces, grills, or gas ranges.
Some ways to prevent tragedies from occurring include fitting a carbon monoxide alarm along with getting your water heater, heating system, and any other oil, gas, or coal-burning appliances serviced yearly by a qualified technician.
It is important to keep anything that releases fumes outside of a vehicle, tent, or building.
