A body of a priest was found in the ocean after he tied himself to 1,000 helium balloons in an attempt to fly over the Atlantic.
Father Adelir Antonio de Carli was found off the coast of southeastern Brazil after the failed journey.
According to reports, a tugboat near the city of Macae noticed his lifeless body after he disappeared while flying over the sea as part of a fundraising event.
Macae’s chief of police Daniel Bandeira said: “We were almost certain that it was the priest due to various elements, such as the clothes and material used in the balloon trip. The DNA only confirmed our suspicions.”
The priest was an experienced skydiver. He had a radio and a GPS tracker on him so he could report his location to the Navy and air tragic control.
But eight hours after attaching himself to the balloons, the priest lost contact with port authority officials.
He reportedly called his friends to tell them that he was only moments away from crashing into the water.
This was not the first time the priest had tried a similar stunt. On January 13, 2008, he used 600 balloons for a four-hour journey and he managed to land safely.
One social media user commented: “It definitely wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but this man was someone’s family member or friend, and some or all of those people are still alive. Have some compassion for those who have weathered grief for someone they love instead of turning it into a running joke publicly on the internet.”
Another wrote: “This is actually very sad. I may not agree with religion, but he was trying to make money to help people. Everyone laughing should be ashamed of themselves.”
