A 33-year-old man tragically died after his cat bit his finger four years ago.
It was in 2018 when Henrik Kriegbaum Plettner decided to adopt a cat and her kittens from a shelter but while trying to move one of the felines, one bit his index finger.
He didn’t think much about it until his hand started to swell hours later.
Henrik was taken to Denmark’s Kolding hospital where he underwent 15 operations.
But several months after the surgeries, his finger still couldn’t function properly and doctors eventually had to amputate it.
However, his health continued to deteriorate.
“He had very fluctuating health,” his mother told local media. “He had a weakened immune system, pneumonia, gout and diabetes.
“The cat had bitten right into a blood vessel, and when a cat bites and pulls its tooth out, the hole closes and the bacteria spreads.”
Bacterial infections in cat bite wounds are usually caused by Pasteurella multocida. In some cases, it can result in a rare bacterial infection called necrotizing fasciitis, which can be life threatening.
Henrik’s grieving wife, Desiree, said: “We knew that he was doing badly. However, we had no idea that he was so seriously ill.
“Go to the doctor after a bite, don’t think, oh, that’s just a cat. Don’t take any chances.”
One internet user commented: “How incredibly unlucky and sad. Poor guy.”
Another shared: “10 years ago my cat bit my finger. Within 3 days inc a visit to get the doctors to see to it I was in so much pain. I had dark red streaks on my hand and going up my wrist. Husband took me to the hospital and I had to go into surgery the next morning.
“Two surgeons operated at the same time. They found cat hair in the bite which had been hidden due to the swelling. I was told one more day delay and I would have potentially lost my hand due to sepsis. 5 days in hospital hooked up on drips. Iodine hand baths. Still doesn’t work properly.
