A man has suffered amnesia while making love to his wife, a new medical report reveals.
In the Irish Medical Journal, staff at the Department of Neurology at University Hospital Limerick presented a case involving a 66-year-old man who suffered temporary memory loss within the first ten minutes of the intimate act between him and his wife.
As the researchers suggested, intercourse – though rarely – can cause Transient Global Amnesia (TGA).
“On the afternoon of presentation, he had engaged in sexual intercourse 10 minutes before the onset of memory disturbance,” the paper read.
“After seeing the date on his phone, he became distressed that he had forgotten his wedding anniversary the day before.
“He had, in fact, celebrated his wedding anniversary with his wife and family on the previous day. His autobiographical memory remained intact, but he had no memory of that morning or the celebrations the night before.”
The medics went on to reveal that the man kept on questioning his wife about the events prior to his intimate act with his wife.
After being rushed to the ER, the man’s “neurological examination was completely normal” and he didn’t exhibit any neurological symptoms.
While the exact cause of TGA remains unknown, researchers suggest it could be linked to migraines and overfilling of veins due to blood flow abnormalities.
In some cases, victims also suffered a temporary loss of memory after intercourse, exercise, emotional distress, or sudden exposure to very hot or very cold water.
It is not clear if the man in question has since fully recovered his memory of the events that happened in the hours before his act of intimacy with his wife.
