Actor John Leguizamo, who played Luigi in the 1993 live-action of Super Mario Bros, has slammed the all-white cast of the new movie and lack of ‘Latinx leads’.
The 62-year-old actor questioned the casting choices as Chris Pratt takes on the iconic role of Mario.
After the trailer of the upcoming movie has been released, John was quick to express his thoughts and praised the color-blind casting of the original film.
The 62-year-old actor took to Twitter and wrote: “So glad #SuperMarioBros is getting a reboot! Obviously, it’s iconic (enough).
“But too bad they went all white! No Latinx in the leads! Groundbreaking color-blind casting in original! Plus I’m the only one who knows how to make this movie work script-wise!”
Lantix is a term used to be inclusive of people who are non-binary or transgender.
John also shared three photos of himself as Luigi along with Bob Hoskins, who played the iconic plumber Mario.
“Apologize to this move right now!” he wrote in the caption.
The highly-anticipated film sees Chris take on the lead role while Charlie Day will play his brother Luigi.
Princess Peace will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
The first trailer was kicked off with a bang with Bowser, played by Jack Black, getting a gold star after fighting an army of penguins.
Mario then landed in Mushroom Kingdom and met Toad, played by Keegan-Michael Key.
In June, Chris opened up about the moment he landed the role of Mario even though he is not of Italian heritage.
The 43-year-old Minnesota native told Variety: “I worked really closely with the directors and trying out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear.”
