Jerry Springer made an agonizing apology before he died at the age of 79.
The talk show host and former Cincinnati mayor had passed away at his home in Chicago months after being diagnosed with cancer.
Jene Galvin, a spokesperson for the family, said in a statement: “Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word.”
“He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on,” Galvin added.
The Jerry Springer Show, which ran from 1991 to 2018, was popular for sharing guests’ horrifying stories and viewers chanting ‘Jerry! Jerry!’ on every episode.
His show became the first talk show to beat The Oprah Winfrey Show but Jerry revealed he never watched his program as he thought it was ‘silly’.
“I would never watch my show. I’m not interested in it. It’s not aimed towards me. This is just a silly show,” he said in 2008.
The show featured outrageous stories about secret love affairs, incestuous couples, and other real-life cases with provocative headlines.
Guests were also allowed to fight on stage before security separated them, and the use of a bell to give a go signal to guests so they could attack one another faced criticism.
In November last year, Jerry discussed the impact his show had on society and apologized for ‘ruining the culture.’
Speaking on David Yontef’s Behind the Velvet Rope podcast, he said: “I just apologize. I’m so sorry. What have I done? I’ve ruined the culture.”
I just hope hell isn’t that hot because I burn real easy. I’m very light-complected, and that kind of worries me,” he added.
