A 26-year-old man collapsed and died only moments after completing a marathon in Arizona.
Brown graduate Pierre Lipton from Providence, Rhode Island, just completed the marathon in 3 hours, 10 minutes, and five seconds on February 4, only 15 minutes before his girlfriend ‘Eleanor Pereboom’ managed to complete it.
But within those 15 minutes, Pereboom thought her boyfriend was celebrating his achievement only to discover that he had collapsed after crossing the finish line.
It is believed that the cause may have been a heart problem caused by electrolyte imbalance.
After drinking water, Pereboom went to find her boyfriend and sent him a message asking him where he was.
But when she didn’t receive a reply, she tried to call him.
Pereboom then used a phone tracker to check his location and was shocked to discover that he was at a hospital.
“That’s when I started to get worried,” she said in an interview with the Boston Globe.
She rushed to find an official who told her that he ‘basically fell right into the arms of paramedics.’
“They tried to do CPR. They tried everything. We still don’t know what happened,” Pereboom expressed.
Lipton’s father Jordan Lipton, an emergency medicine specialist, believe that his son’s body had a ‘sudden electrolyte imbalance’ that resulted in arrhythmia – a medical condition that causes an irregular heartbeat.
Even though the cause of death is still unknown, the grieving father said that his son was ‘healthy’ and ‘took such good care of himself.’
Lipton avoided caffeine and alcohol during training and made sure to ‘shake out his arms, relax his shoulders, check his form, and make sure he had a smile on his face,’ his girlfriend and family said.
