A 62-year-old grandfather accidentally shot his 12-year-old grandson while trying to officiate a wedding ceremony in Texas.
Michael Gardner from Odessa has been arrested after the incident, which occurred at Hillside Events in Denton, Nebraska.
The grandfather was the official presiding over the nuptials but when someone forgot the rings and caused a delay, he tried to get everyone’s attention again by firing a blank round from his Pietta 1860 snub nose revolver into the air.
“When he decided to cock back the hammer of this revolver, it slipped and it shot his grandson in the left shoulder, causing an injury,” Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said during a conference.
The 12-year-old was reportedly sitting near his grandfather when the incident happened.
“What we believe is the glue is what injured the child,” Houchin said as the blank round contained a mix of black powder and glue.
Fortunately, the youngster’s injury was not fatal and he was taken to hospital before being transferred to hospital in Omaha for more treatment.
“We do have the weapon, the ammunition and the spent casing.”
Houchin also said that Gardner turned himself in as he wanted to take responsibility for his actions.
The grandfather was taken into custody on the grounds of suspected felony child ab*se. due to the ‘seriousness of the injuries.’
“What the county attorney decides to charge him with is up to him,” Houchin explained, adding that the situation aligns wit the child ab*se statute.
“It’s just kind of neglectful to take a gun out that has blanks and fire it amongst people,” he continued. “Playing with firearms, no matter what, [even] if they’re blanks, bad things can certainly happen.”
Houchin also said they do not believe the grandfather intended to hurt the young boy but added that ‘the act was not very smart.’
