The grieving parents of a healthy girl who sadly passed away from sepsis only days after she was taken to a hospital with what they thought was a flu are now raising awareness of the ‘hidden killer’.
Lauren Menzies was watching Modern Family on the sofa with flu. But less than 12 hours later, she was fighting for her life in a hospital.
Her heartbroken parents, Chris and Sarah, are now doing their best to raise awareness of sepsis. They have also set up a fundraising page to help raise money for Sepsis Research FEAT.
“Our daughter, Lauren, was a typical cheeky beautiful and healthy thirteen year old girl,” Sarah wrote on the page.
“Then she caught the flu, which then turned to sepsis.
“One minute she was on the settee at home, watching Modern Family and complaining about the flavor of Lucozade she had been bought, less than 12 hours later she was fighting for her life at Alder Hey.
“A fight that unfortunately she was to lose, less than six days later.”
Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Sarah described the moment she rushed her daughter to hospital.
“When I took her in, I was worried I was over-reacting a bit,” she expressed.
She said that there was so much illness going around that they did not think it was something serious.
“She’d been at her dance class on Monday and a drama production on Tuesday, so there was no indication it was anything more serious than a tummy bug.
“Then, she went downhill so quickly.”
The mother said that that time she thought viruses and flu could be ‘dealt with’ but warned others: “Don’t write it off, it could be sepsis.”
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection, according to Mayo Clinic.
The infection-fighting processes turn on the body and cause organs to work improperly. It may progress to septic shock, which can damage the kidneys, lungs, and other organs. Severe damage can result in death.
