An 8-year-old girl has had every strand of her hair plucked out from her head by hand in a painful tradition in Gujarat, India, leaving people around the world surprised.
Aangi Bagrech went through the agonizing procedure as she started a religious life as a nun.
In the video, the young girl can be seen enduring the hair plucking procedure moments before her new strictly religious lifestyle.
Aangi started living as a ‘jain nun’ during the lockdown.
Her father Dinesh said: “She was tested by her gurus and they found her eligible to become a monk. She spent nearly two years with monks and will now live her life in monkhood.
“She refused mobile phone, precious gifts and clothes. She sat on a nine-day fast with a demand for diksha, about five months ago.
“My aunt took diksha in the past and she is the inspiration for Aangi.
“My entire family feels proud that a girl from our family is renouncing the materialistic world.”
Jainism is an ancient religion that teaches that the ‘way to liberation and bliss is to live lives of harmlessness and renunciation.’
The hair removal procedure called kaya klesh is something the girl will always remember. According to reports, it is done to symbolize that the nuns are indifferent to physical pain.
The youngster will now live with a group of nuns who travel around by foot.
Jain nuns survive on alms, wear simple white clothes, and do not use electricity.
One internet user commented: “There is no way an 8-year-old child can consent to this kind of treatment.”
Another wrote: “Why does human beings have rituals to follow for some reasons?”
A third added: “How can such a choice make any sense at the age of 8?”
