After waiting for 13 long years, the sequel to the 2009 Avatar film has finally been released.
Fans are thrilled and eager to see the new movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, but one man’s excitement may have gone a little too far.
A father of two has reportedly died from a heart attack while watching the movie at a theater in India.
Lakshmireddy Srinu reportedly collapsed inside a movie theater while viewing the latest installment in James Cameron’s Avatar series.
The devastating incident happened in the Kakinada district in the southern eastern state of Andhra Pradesh.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but he was pronounced dead on arrival at Peddapuram Government Hospital.
He has left behind two children.
Speaking with The Hindustan Times, Dr. Sanjeev Gera – the director of Cardiology at Fortis Hospital in India – explained that watching films with stressful scenes can trigger changes to the beating pattern of the heart and may result in cardiac arrest.
“Heart attack can cause a cardiac arrest and patients can have sudden cardiac death also. Heart attack can be due to blockage in arteries especially when there are issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sugar, heavy smoking, obesity, or bad genetics,” Dr. Gera explained.
“So when you are not accustomed to some exercise regime and if you undertake sudden exercise routine like you do some weight lifting etc you can collapse.”
Dr. Gera added: “Especially after Covid, there is a continuing inflammation in our blood vessels. Because of stress, increase in BP like what happened in this case, arteries of heart could have ruptured and that can cause sudden cardiac arrest.”
In 2010, a Taiwanese man also died while watching the first Avatar movie due to ‘over-excitement.’
