Elliot Page, who was previously known as Ellen Page, has revealed how he got shingles after being surrounded by a ‘cast full of cis men’ while filming Inception.
The Oscar-nominated star said that he was feeling stressed about his s*xuality and gender identity at that time.
In his new memoir Pageboy, the 36-year-old wrote: “Shingles popped out of my spine while filming Inception when I was twenty-two. Despite everyone being delightful to work with, I felt out of place.”
The Umbrella Academy actor went on: “In a cast full of cis men, I did not understand the role I found myself in. For the first two weeks of the film I joked I would be recast with Keira Knightley, and rightfully so.”
His character in the film is an architecture student named Ariadne whose job is to construct the dreamscapes.
Ariadne is recruited by Dom Cobb (DiCaprio) and Arthur (Gordon-Levitt) to join their team.
The blockbuster was filmed more than a decade before Page came out as transgender and made a transition.
This comes after the actor claimed he had s*x with Juno co-star Olivia Thirlby ‘all the time’ while filming the 2007 film, only days after he revealed that he had a secret relationship with Kate Mara.
Page also said he was attracted to Thirlby, who played Leah in the movie.
“I was taken aback the moment I saw Olivia Thirlby. She seemed so much older, capable, and centered.”
He added: “S*xually open, far removed from where I was at the time. But the chemistry was palpable, it pulled me in.”
Page also revealed that being intimate with the actress helped his ‘shame’ disappear.
“I didn’t see a glint of it in her eyes and I wanted that — done feeling wretched about who I am.”
