Doctors accidentally cut off a baby’s ear during a c-section after they were forced to use only cell phones for lighting because of a power outage at a Mexico hospital.
19-year-old Karla Urizandi gave birth to her healthy baby boy Juan Adriel Solis at Mexicali International Specialties Clinic on June 6.
But during the delivery, the hospital lost power for 26 minutes as the backup generator was not activated.
The new mom said that the anesthesia had already been administered when the power suddenly went out.
Her obstetrician Dr. David Santoyo, her gynecologist, and another doctor decided to proceed with the procedure.
“With three cell phones pointed at my belly, they begin to perform a cesarean section. I told him no, I don’t want to die. In reality, it scared me a lot,” Urizandi shared.
Urizandi said that she was terrified as the doctor performed a c-section before her baby boy’s left ear was accidentally cut while trying to remove a hemangioma, a vascular birthmark.
“After a few minutes I hear my baby cry,” she recalled. “I think that they are going to put him aside, no. More time passes and I ask him, ‘And the baby?’”
The new mom said she wasn’t told about the injury and only found out about it when her husband gave her the shocking news.
“I was really waiting for a doctor or someone to come in and give me an explanation, but it wasn’t like that. At no time did they arrive or explain anything to me,” she expressed.
Urizandi and her husband filed an incident report, accusing the hospital and doctors of malpractice.
The couple are home with their baby, who is still recovering from the accident.
