A 9-year-old boy tragically died after he shielded his mother from a gunman who killed four other victims.
Daniel Enrique Laso and his mother Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25, were both killed after Francisco Oropesa broke into a home and opened fire.
The shooter also killed Jose Jonathan Casarez, 18, Diana Velasquez Alvarado, 21, and Julisa Molina Rivera, 31.
Police are now searching for Oropesa. Officers were able to track him using his phone but the trail suddenly disappeared on Saturday evening.
Daniel’s grieving father, Wilson Garcia, told NBC News that the gunman, who was their neighbor, entered their home with a semi-automatic-style rifle after they requested him to move his shooting target practice as their one-month-old baby could not sleep.
“So we went and told the man to please stop shooting, or go continue shooting further away from the house. But he answered by saying he was in his property and could do whatever he wants,” he said.
Wilson said that Oropesa was on his porch drinking and smoking before going inside his house and loaded his gun.
“My son, he died because he was defending his mother. When he saw her on the floor, he ran toward her, and that man had no compassion. A kid crying for his mom,” he added.
Wilson said one of the victims urged him to run after Sonia was killed so that he could still be there for his other children.
Authorities are still looking for the suspect and has asked the public to give any information or tip that could lead to his arrest.
