A 7-year-old boy who bravely jumped into a six-foot-deep swimming pool to rescue a toddler from drowning has been dubbed a ‘hero.
’
Massiah Browne from California was swimming with his family when he noticed a 3-year-old boy, who is a stranger to him, was lying with his eyes and mouth open under the water.
He didn’t think twice when he dove into the pool and saved the toddler’s life.
Massiah, who has been taking swimming lessons, told Good Morning America: “I was just playing in the pool and then I saw a boy at the bottom of the pool and I went to go get him.”
The 7-year-old was swimming in their apartment complex with his relative Savannah, 9, at that time.
His mother, Tiara Delvalle, rushed to the pool after other relatives informed her of the incident.
The young hero recalled seeing the toddler at the bottom of the pool before diving into the six-foot-deep water and pulling him out. Savannah helped pull the 3-year-old boy to the deck before calling the adults, who contacted 911.
“Savannah brought him to his mom and then they did CPR on the boy and then they called the doctor,” Massiah said.
A spokesperson for the Sacramento Fire Department told ABC News that first responders received a call on July 19. Before emergency services arrived, witnesses performed CPR on the toddler.
The child was taken to the hospital in critical condition ‘with advanced life support efforts provided by Sacramento Fighters.’
The toddler has made a full recovery, which his mother has described as a ‘miracle.’
Drowning is the second leading cause of death in children between the ages of 1 and 4, the CDC reported.
In a 2021 report by the American Academy of Pediatrics, it was revealed that teenage boys and male toddlers are more at risk of dying from drowning.
