A baby boy died tragically after a woman with undiagnosed Alzheimer’s drove dangerously and veered into the path of another vehicle.
The shocking accident took place in Waterbeach, England, where 5-month-old Louis Thorold was pushed in his stroller by 36-year-old mom Rachael when a van swerved off the road and plowed into the pair back in 2021.
In the collision, the mother’s body was thrown into the air and she suffered severe injuries. Unfortunately, baby Louis didn’t survive the impact.
After the incident, it was revealed that the van veered off the road after being struck by an oncoming car operated by 74-year-old Shelagh Robertson.
The investigation also confirmed that the van was forced to veer off the road to avoid a full-on collision with Robertson’s vehicle.
Furthermore, it has come to light that the collision caused by Robertson might have been a result of her undiagnosed atypical Alzheimer’s.
The case was eventually taken to Cambridge Crown Court where it was ruled that Robertson had driven carelessly and was responsible for causing Louis’ death.
“Louis was the sweetest, happiest, joyful and most beautiful baby. Louis had his future and all his potential stolen. A life sentence for us, his family, our community, and everyone who hears this story,” the baby’s heartbroken parents said.
“Louis will live on. His legacy, that one day no one will have to deal with the death of a child on Britain’s roads. Please, if you are in any doubt of your ability, don’t get in the car.”
The statement continued: “If you have any doubts about your parents, relatives or love ones’ ability to drive then please talk to them.
“The consequences are serious, real, and they last forever; having a simple conversation can literally save someone’s life.”
