Just when you thought the controversies surrounding team USA have come to an end, Olympian Raven Saunders recently proved how that’s far from the truth.
The famous athlete reportedly staged a bold demonstration as she stood at the Tokyo Olympics medal podium. And then, all of a sudden, she began raising her arms above her head in an ‘X’ fashion. Without a doubt, the move sparked controversy across the board as many were left confused at the bizarre display.
In the same way, the athlete was called out for being the latest sensation from Team USA to inject an element of politics into the Olympic Games.
Despite receiving a sparkling silver medal, the shot-potter felt the need to take center stage and express her thoughts on a matter that she felt needed much attention. And that was related to diversity.
The latest protest which took place on Sunday showed the athlete standing at the photo op during a medal receiving ceremony. But all of a sudden, she decided to step off of her podium and lift her arms high above her head, forming a big X using her wrists.
When questioned by the press who was stationed at the event as to what exactly that meant, the gay athlete took out a few minutes to explain.
“This is the interaction which all types of oppressed people are supposed to meet,” she boldly added.
The star also spoke about how many questions continuously pop up in her head regarding whether or not the Olympics could ever stay true to its mission that supports diversity.“They will always try to fit you inside boxes and place you places where you don’t belong. But this is my message to the younger people that no matter how many boxes they force you into, you need to be you and you can be you,” she concluded.
