A young and healthy mom died suddenly in a one-in-a-million case that tore her family apart.
36-year-old Price Merepol McMahon was a mother-of-two and a marathon runner from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who succumbed to a rare case of flu despite having no underlying health conditions.
As her heartbroken family revealed, Price’s condition deteriorated rapidly last Monday after spending the weekend at her parents’ home to watch the World Cup Finals.
Just a day later, on Tuesday, the mother succumbed to her illness. Her death followed just a day after she first exhibited symptoms of an infection.
“The doctor’s words, I’ll always remember this, this is a one-in-a-million case of influenza,” the woman’s brother, Ian Meropol, said in an interview with Boston Globe.
As of this writing, it remains unclear what exactly contributed to the severe case considering that Price was otherwise healthy and very physically active.
“She was always incredibly smart, hardworking, driven, she was the one that everyone knew would be successful,” Ian added in a tribute to his sister.
While experts have defined this year’s flu season as the worst in the last decade, people with no underlying symptoms typically don’t suffer severe symptoms.
The flu is most dangerous to elderly people, young children, and people with health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, lung disease, or weak immune system.
Price, however, was otherwise healthy and active and often played tennis and competed in marathons, leaving the doctors baffled by her extreme case of infection.
