A care worker was caught on camera sexually assaulting an elderly dementia sufferer while her family watched on helplessly.
48-year-old Phillip Carey was arrested and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of ten years after admitting to assaulting a vulnerable 99-year-old woman with dementia in her care home room.
The gruesome attack on the pensioner was witnessed by the woman’s family who installed a hidden camera in her room after the woman pleaded with them not to leave her alone in the care home.
“Don’t leave me, they will hurt me,” the lady reportedly told her family, prompting the installation of the hidden camera in her room.
While the family suspected the woman’s dementia could have played a role in her allegations, they were left in shock after seeing Carey enter the woman’s room and sexually harass her.
After witnessing the attack, the enraged family immediately called the police who rushed to the care home and arrested the man.
The 48-year-old later admitted to his gruesome crimes after the prosecutors brought forth the family’s camera footage and forensic evidence.
“Carey abused his position of trust and targeted a vulnerable woman whom he should have been caring for,” Prosecutor Sophie Rozdolskyj said.
“I am grateful to the victim’s family who have shown great strength throughout the Court proceedings.
“I hope today’s sentence provides them with some comfort, knowing Carey has been brought to justice for his actions.”
