Two women were killed and nine others were left injured after an elderly man crashed into an outdoor restaurant in Washington, DC on Friday.

Police said that the elderly man lost control of his SUV at around 12:18 pm and plowed into the patio area of the Parthenon Restaurant and Chevy Chase Lounge.

An adult woman tragically died from injuries, a spokesperson for DC EMS & Fire said to Daily Mail. An hour later, Metropolitan Police Department reported that another adult woman passed away.

DC EMS & Fire Chief John Donnelly told the news outlet that eight people were rushed to hospitals and at least five of them with severe injuries.

Others received treatment for minor injuries and decided not to be taken to the hospital.

Duncan Bedlion, the Commander of the 2nd Police District of the Metropolitan Police Department, said that there was a huge number of people taking advantage of outdoor dining.

Fire officials and police said that the elderly man stayed on the scene and cooperated.

They believe the incident was an accident.

Tim Shorrock, a neighbor of one of the women who died, told Daily Mail: “I’ve noticed a lot of speeding drivers on Connecticut Avenue over the last year or so.”

He also said that he was nearly involved in an accident months ago.

“About three months ago, three blocks south of the accident today, I watched from the sidewalk as a SUV traveling about 80 mph sped past; the driver lost control, and the car flipped and landed on its top,” Shorrock shared. “Firefighters had to cut the driver out of the car with the jaws of life. He could have easily hit me – the flipped car came to rest less than 100 feet from me.”

Established in 1989. The Parthenon Restaurant is described as “an authentic Greek restaurant” in the Chevy Chase neighborhood. It also caters dinners and hosts special events on holidays.
