A 39-year-old woman accused of murdering her stepfather after she found photos of herself without any clothes on his computer has spoken out.
Jade Janks started her trial in Vista Superior Court after the lifeless body of Thomas Merriman, 64, was found under boxes and pile of trash at the home they shared in January 2021.
Prosecutors argue that she drugged her Merriman before strangling him after finding the photos.
Toxicologist Raymond Gary said that the 64-year-old had high levels of Ambien, a sleeping pill, in his system.
Janks has now described the moment she found the photos while cleaning Merriman’s office area while he was in the hospital.
“When I went to clean in his office area, I’m wiping things down, I bumped the mouse, and it shook the screen awake. There’s a picture of female breasts on the screen. I have a beauty mark on my chest, those are my breasts,” she expressed.
She also said that she discovered more than 100 photos of herself on Merriman’s computer and that he cropped the pictures and organized them into folders according to body parts.
“It was the most violating, awful, gut-wrenching feeling ever,” Janks said.
“I felt sick, I felt I couldn’t even touch my own skin. I don’t know if there’s words, not even in a movie have I seen something so sick.”
Janks has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
However, San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Jorge Del Portillo said that the ‘murder was design.’
Janks allegedly sent a message to a friend admitting to her crimes. One is said to have read: “I just dosed the hell out of him. Stopping for whiskey then at Dixieland to stall. LMK.”
It is not clear how Merriman gained access to the photos.
The trial is ongoing.
